Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is a type of yoga where through a series of postures linked together by breath and movement synchronicity one achieves calmness and clarity of mind and a strength, flexibility and stamina of the physical body.

The series comprises of about 60 postures, which begin with sun salutations, then continues through standing postures, sitting postures and then a closing sequence (followed in this order). The practitioner does postures in a dynamic flowing sequence.  The sequence is learned gradually,  developing the awareness of the breath, body and mind.

The Ashtanga classes taught at Petra Yoga are either in the led or self-practice format. In the led classes, the teacher leads the class through postures and breathing, whereas in the self-practice class students, over time, learn the sequence and practice it independently, with the teacher only adjusting and assisting when necessary.
