Ashtanga practice around the world

Durvasasana, a posture from the Third Series (Advanced A) of Ashtanga Yoga

Durvasasana. A pose from the Ashtanga Third Series

When I'm at home in London, I practice Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga five days a week at Dharma Shala, under the guidance of my teacher, Hamish Hendry. This traditional method, known as Mysore Style or Self-Practice, allows students to move at their own pace and level within a fixed sequence—no improvisation or modifications unless necessary due to injury. The teacher provides hands-on guidance, offering adjustments and support tailored to each student’s needs.

Although Ashtanga is physically demanding, for me, its benefits go far beyond the physical. Waking up at 5 a.m. and dedicating 90 minutes to the same sequence every day has become a grounding ritual. The postures I dread are often the ones that bring me the greatest mental clarity and focus.

But what happens when I’m away from London? Simple—I search for "Ashtanga Mysore" in the city I’m visiting and find a place to continue my practice.

I teach Mysore classes twice a week at my studio in Kentish Town:

Mondays 6:15-7:45pm;

Saturdays 11:15-12:45pm.

If you are interested in trying it out, please click here to book. All levels welcome.
